Morgan Stampley / Artist Statement !

The start of my senior year in high school, I enrolled in this class (Beginning Media Arts) and I didn’t know what to expect. I never thought in a lifetime I would like photography so much to the point where if there is a moment, I want to capture it.
Before we got into any assignments or took any photographs, we had to learn the ins and outs of the Adobe Photoshop Software. My favorite techniques to use that we learned was: desaturate, blur, and using typography in my photos.
In the beginning weeks of Media Arts class, we started paying Homage to well-known photographers of our choice. I chose to pay homage to Garry Winohard because he shot all types of social scenes and people in them, just like everyday life! I thought this would be a great concept for me being that I’m a very social person and I’m away from my house all the time. Garry Winohard was known for his portrayal of America in the early 1960’s so I thought it would be a cool idea to be known for my portrayal of Minnesota in 2010-2011.
After we learned about paying Homage to well-known photographers, our next task was to complete photographs with typography in them. To do this, we had to learn about typefaces, which was the style or design of a font and find out which design would look best on each photo. In our time here, we learned about a specific typeface called Helvetica: it has no serifs and it is a very classic font that you see everyday.
In the end, I have found a new love of photography. The meaning behind my photography name, “Company Loves Photography”, anybody can find his or her love in anything! My love is in people and that’s where I got my inspiration.

Annie Leibovitz Photography

Born in 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut, Annie Leibovitz enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute intent on studying painting. It was not until she traveled to Japan with her mother the summer after her sophomore year that she discovered her interest in taking photographs. When she returned to San Francisco that fall, she began taking night classes in photography.Jann Wenner is the founding efitor of Rolling Stone and being that Wenner liked her portfolio, he gave Leibovitz her first job: John Lennon. Leibovitz’s black-and-white portrait of the shaggy-looking Beatle graced the cover of the January 21, 1971 issue. Two years later she was named Rolling Stone chief photographer. In 1980 Rolling Stone sent Leibovitz to photograph John Lennon and Yoko Ono, who had recently released their album “Double Fantasy.” For the portrait Leibovitz imagined that the two would pose together nude. Lennon disrobed, but Ono refused to take off her pants. Leibovitz “was kinda disappointed,” according to Rolling Stone, and so she told Ono to leave her clothes on(below).

Annie Leibovitz said that, "I was never taught lighting in school, only black-and-white. I had to learn color by myself." Annie also served as the official photographer for the Rolling Stones’ 1975 world tour, shooting Keith Richard and Mick Jagger.
Annie Leibovitz:Photographs, the photographer’s first book, was published in 1983. The same year Leibovitz joined Vanity Fair and was made the magazine’s first contributing photographer.AtVanity Fairshe became known for her wildly lit, staged, and provocative portraits of celebrities. Leibovitz’s most recent book, A Photographer’s Life: 1990-2005, includes her trademark celebrity portraits. But it also features personal photographs from Leibovitz’s life: her parents, siblings, children, nieces and nephews, and Sontag. To the right is a photograph of Micheal Jordan, a side shot and pictured below is Angelina Jolie in a bathtub shoot.

Typefaces/Typography: "Helvetica"

Helvetica is defined as:a typeface in which characters have no serifs. Other people define Helvetica as: beautiful, timeless, and something that just shouldn't be messed with.I just look at Helvetica as another font and before the movie, I didn't know what a "typeface" was. As a continued to watch the movie, I got the feel of how important typefaces were, especially this certain one. I mean, Helvetica was everywhere! On shirts, building, public buses, and roads. Everyday artists such as ones that work with magazines or graphic designs was an everyday must for them.To me, Helvetica is a classic. I agree with authors when the say that its' "neutral" or shouldn't have a meaning. I believe that Helvetica will always be here and it is a very timeless Typeface that shouldn't be messed with.

Paying Homage! Part 3

The picture to the right is a picture of my nieces and my baby sister. We had a BBQ about a week ago and I took this picture of them having their little social time! I thought it was so cute because you rarely see this. Their nature is very natural and playful because they aren't posing for the picture just like in Garry Winohard's collection, you can't even tell the camera was there.

Paying Homage! Part 2

Homage is defined as something done or given in acknowledgement or consideration of the worth of another. In these beginning weeks of Media Art, we have started paying Homage to well-known photographers of our choice. I chose to pay homage to Garry Winohard because he shot all types of social scenes and people in them, just like everyday life ! I thought I could have fun with this photographer because I am a very social person, always on the go and having fun with my everyday life, whether it's a party, shopping in Uptown, or having smoothies with the girls.

The picture to the left is a picture I took of my friends Downtown. We went swimming that day then walked around and grabbed a bite to eat, just like any other day. While this was more posed rather than natural, I like this photo because you can see the cars and hotels in the distance behind them, like any other day.
